Stijn Pommée – Lady’s Mantle, 2025

Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) is easily overlooked.

Growing quietly among grasses and roadsides, its pleated leaves gather rainwater into shimmering pools. A lesser-known member of the rose family, it blooms from May through July, rarely growing taller than forty centimeters. For centuries it has been used in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in relation to women’s reproductive health, as well as to soothe digestive discomfort and support the healing of minor wounds and sores.

For this exhibition, Stijn’s drawing of a Lady’s Mantle unfolds across our entire window front: a gentle reminder of leaves swaying in the wind, offering comfort, shelter and calm.

Stijn’s practice centres on drawing as a way of rethinking the decorative. Through slow, meticulous observation and drawing, he shifts decorative motifs into dreamlike and, at times, unsettling images, where tenderness coexists with sensuality, humour and unease. He consistently finds himself drawn to delicate, ornamental and whimsical subjects.

Over the past year, Stijn has worked within a set of simple limitations: using only graphite, he has made drawings of plants and flowers, giving each of them time and close attention. The resulting works are not quite botanical drawings, but portraits of sorts: tender, strange and occasionally uncanny.

Looking closely at these seemingly sweet, tiny and unassuming subjects became an exercise in seeing differently. A common daisy, perhaps the sweetest flower of all, turns into a hairy figure. A thistle’s thorns begin to feel strangely inviting. The Lady’s Mantle lives up to its name, evoking a pleated garment or folds of skin. The portraits have a tactile and sensual quality, rooted in those very traits we often try to hide or erase when it comes to our own bodies.

The original drawing of the Lady’s Mantle leaf measured 10 by 14,5 centimeters. The leaf itself was even smaller and had to be scanned to reveal its full detail. Enlarged to more than one hundred times its original size, it invites us to slow down and pay attention to what usually escapes our notice. What first appears modest and ordinary reveals itself to be remarkably intricate, suggesting that careful looking can quietly transform the familiar.

Stijn Pommée (1994, the Netherlands) is a Dutch artist living in Amsterdam. He graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2016, where he specialised in textiles. During his studies, he moved between knitting, weaving, photography and image-making.

A Mondriaan Fund residency at a historic mansion in the north of the Netherlands marked the beginning of Stijn’s exploration of drawing: a medium that brought together the material sensibility of textiles with his enduring fascination for images. In the years since, he has continued to develop this practice, exhibiting his work across various galleries and artist-run spaces in the Netherlands, including Billytown in The Hague. Alchemilla Vulgaris is Stijn’s first exhibition in Portugal.

Stijn Pommée – Alchemilla Vulgaris
1.8.26 – 21.8.26
