Ruth van Beek (1977, the Netherlands) lives and works in Koog aan de Zaan, the Netherlands. Her widespread body of work lives on the border between photography and painting and is united by its specificity of spirit: layering unexpected pairings of archival images, shapes and vibrant color in often playfully paradoxical ways.
Van Beek approaches ordinary things through a consciously naive, curious gaze. Her practice consists of collages, constellations of archival images, artist’s books, and small handmade objects. Her work is driven by the idea that things possess agency; that objects influence one another and the world around them. She finds or creates rhythms in found images, and then uses these to create new ones.
Van Beek consistently explores how humans relate to objects, and where that attraction to objects comes from. Through her work, she researches the relationship between photography and the photographed object, and photography as object itself. It is the afterlife of a photograph that interests her, not so much the motion of taking it. Van Beek invites the viewer to see how an object has a life of its own. Her practice can be read as an act of care, of animating a body that lies within the image.
The works she makes lead two lives. In person they’re often very small objects, with shadows and construction, possessing a clear physical presence. Then, when scanned and used digitally, printed in books, they become photography again: a reproduction that suddenly has a different life, and is experienced in an entirely different way.
For this show, we are bringing together works on legs, and books Van Beek has published, most of which are now sold out. Legs and books; two things to lean one’s existence on. The show will be a window exhibition in November, and open its insides to the public during the opening and the month of December.
Van Beek has published numerous artist books, including The Arrangement (RVB Books, 2013), and The Oldest Thing (Van Zoetendaal Publishers, 2023) which were both shortlisted for the Aperture Photobook of the Year Award, as well as How To Do The Flowers (Art Paper Editions & Dashwood Books, 2018) and Eldorado (Van Zoetendaal Publishers, 2020). Her newest book, Dishes for Dolls (2024), a leporello published by Fotokino, will be for sale throughout the exhibition.
Her work finds a natural home in books, as a space where she plays with expectations of the images. Images in a book are always a representation of things; the real object could be large or small. Her books are therefore never a catalogue of the work. The work influences the book and the book influences the work.
Ruth van Beek (1977) graduated in 2002 from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her work has been exhibited across Europe, the US, China and Japan and featured in magazines such as Hanatsubaki Magazine, Mother Tongue, De Gids, The New Yorker, Vogue Magazine, Centrefold Magazine, Foam Magazine, IMA Magazine, The British Journal of Photography, The New York Review of Books, The Aperture Photobook Review, De Standaard, Elephant Magazine, Zeit Magazine and The New York Times.
Van Beek lives and works in Koog aan de Zaan, in a traditional wooden ‘Zaans’ house, where a door separates her home from her studio, meaning daily life is always close to her work. This threshold between the household and the studio becomes increasingly blurry over time, as both inform each other. Since 2014, she has taught at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Van Beek is represented by The Ravestijn Gallery in Amsterdam.

Van Beek publicou numerosos livros de artista, entre os quais The Arrangement (RVB Books, 2013) e The Oldest Thing (Van Zoetendaal Publishers, 2023), ambos selecionados para a lista de finalistas do prémio Aperture Photobook of the Year Award. Publicou também How To Do The Flowers (Art Paper Editions & Dashwood Books, 2018) e Eldorado (Van Zoetendaal Publishers, 2020).
O seu trabalho foi exposto por toda a Europa, nos Estados Unidos, na China e no Japão, e publicado em revistas e publicações como Hanatsubaki Magazine, Mother Tongue, De Gids, The New Yorker, Vogue Magazine, Centrefold Magazine, Foam Magazine, IMA Magazine, The British Journal of Photography, The New York Review of Books, The Aperture Photobook Review, De Standaard, Elephant Magazine, Zeit Magazine e The New York Times.
