No Man’s Art Gallery and tender prospects present Nocturnas, the first solo exhibition by Alan Hernández (1992, Mexico) in Lisbon, Portugal.
Through textiles, embroidery and crafted materials, Hernández creates hybrid beings that carry traces of intimacy and metamorphosis. His work reminds us that within the night's silence, amid fragility and absence, the possibility of rebirth is always present.
Nocturnal life invites another way of seeing: one guided less by certainty and more by instinct, where identities remain fluid and beauty reveals itself slowly. Through ornamentation, embellishment and the reactivation of magical thinking, Hernández creates a world where darkness is not a void, but a refuge in which other beings, desires and rituals can emerge.
Across his work, transformation is closely tied to vulnerability. Wings, bodies and ornamental surfaces become forms of protection, while attraction can turn into entanglement, and fragility into armour. Hernández's creatures inhabit a space between the organic and the constructed, the beautiful and the unsettling, the tender and the threatening.
Known for a self-referential practice that combines a subtle sense of humour with a distinct political charge, Hernández rethinks his position as a queer male within society, exploring the body, gender, race, sexuality and identity. His textile practice is informed by the knowledge passed down from his mother, who worked as a seamstress, making sewing both a technical inheritance and an intimate language of care.
His sculptural works evolve intuitively throughout the making process, drawing from both nature and the human body. Their ambiguous forms resist fixed categories, suggesting that there can be freedom in remaining unresolved.
Alan Hernández (1992, Mexico) graduated in Plastic and Visual Arts from the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca (UABJO) in 2020. That same year, he received the CurArte Prize from SECULTA Oaxaca and was awarded the FONCA Young Creators Grant (2020–2021). He was an artist-in-residence at Fundación Casa Wabi in Oaxaca in 2025. His work has been exhibited across Mexico, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands and Canada, and is currently on view at Contextile 2026, the Contemporary Textile Art Biennale in Guimarães.

Através de têxteis, bordados e materiais trabalhados artesanalmente, Hernández cria seres híbridos que carregam vestígios de intimidade e metamorfose. O seu trabalho recorda-nos que, no silêncio da noite, entre a fragilidade e a ausência, a possibilidade de renascimento está sempre presente.
A vida noturna convida a uma outra forma de ver: guiada menos pela certeza e mais pelo instinto, onde as identidades permanecem fluidas e a beleza se revela lentamente. Através da ornamentação, do adorno e da reativação do pensamento mágico, Hernández cria um mundo onde a escuridão não é um vazio, mas um refúgio no qual outros seres, desejos e rituais podem emergir.
Ao longo do seu trabalho, a transformação está intimamente ligada à vulnerabilidade. Asas, corpos e superfícies ornamentais tornam-se formas de proteção, enquanto a atração pode transformar-se em enredamento, e a fragilidade em armadura. As criaturas de Hernández habitam um espaço entre o orgânico e o construído, o belo e o inquietante, o terno e o ameaçador.
Conhecido por uma prática autorreferencial que combina um subtil sentido de humor com uma distinta carga política, Hernández repensa a sua posição enquanto homem queer na sociedade, explorando o corpo, o género, a raça, a sexualidade e a identidade. A sua prática têxtil é influenciada pelo conhecimento transmitido pela sua mãe, que trabalhou como costureira, fazendo da costura simultaneamente uma herança técnica e uma linguagem íntima de cuidado.
As suas obras escultóricas desenvolvem-se intuitivamente ao longo do processo de criação, inspirando-se tanto na natureza como no corpo humano. As suas formas ambíguas resistem a categorias fixas, sugerindo que pode existir liberdade em permanecer num estado de indefinição.
Alan Hernández (1992, México) licenciou-se em Artes Plásticas e Visuais pela Universidade Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca (UABJO) em 2020. Nesse mesmo ano, recebeu o Prémio CurArte da SECULTA Oaxaca e foi distinguido com a Bolsa para Jovens Criadores da FONCA (2020–2021). Em 2025, foi artista em residência na Fundación Casa Wabi, em Oaxaca. O seu trabalho foi apresentado no México, na Suíça, em França, nos Países Baixos e no Canadá, e encontra-se atualmente em exposição na Contextile 2026, a Bienal de Arte Têxtil Contemporânea de Guimarães.
